Anchoring 101: Tips for Securing Your Portable Garage the Right Way

A portable garage is a smart investment when it comes to protecting your vehicles, equipment, or outdoor tools—but even the sturdiest shelter needs proper anchoring to do its job effectively. Whether you’re dealing with wind, rain, or shifting ground, the right anchoring method ensures your structure stays put and performs season after season.

Here are some key tips for properly anchoring your portable garage:

1. Know Your Surface Type

Before you install your garage, consider the surface it's being placed on—this will determine which type of anchoring system you need:

  • Grass or dirt: Use auger-style anchors that twist deep into the ground. These are designed to grip soil firmly and resist wind uplift.

  • Concrete or asphalt: Choose bolt-down anchors made specifically for hard surfaces. These typically involve drilling into the slab and securing with heavy-duty bolts.

  • Gravel: A hybrid approach may work best—consider driving anchors into the ground and adding weight to the frame’s base with concrete blocks.

2. Use the Right Number of Anchors

Don’t skimp on anchors. Most shelters have specific recommendations for how many anchors should be used based on size and model. Follow manufacturer guidelines, and if your area experiences high winds, consider doubling the number of anchor points for added security.

3. Anchor All Four Corners (and Then Some)

Anchoring each corner is the bare minimum. For larger shelters, it’s a good idea to add mid-point anchors along the sides to reduce stress on the frame and prevent shifting.

4. Check Anchors Regularly

Over time, weather and use can loosen anchors or shift them slightly. Inspect your anchoring system seasonally—especially after heavy storms—and retighten or replace components as needed.

5. Consider Anchor Kits

Many portable garages come with compatible anchor kits, making it easier to choose the right equipment for your structure. At Shelters of America, we offer a variety of anchor types to match your shelter and site conditions.
